Louisa County to wit
I Thomas Gardner being a Justice of the Peace for the aforesaid County do hereby Certify that Wm Hollings of the s'd County hath this day made oath before me that [torn]ick[see image below for name as it appears in original], a negro slave whom he hath now brought before me is a runaway. That he has just grounds to believe the s'd slave is the property of Hardin Duke of the County aforesaid that he was taken up on last night at my Plantation in the County of Louisa on the South River and the distance in my opinion between the s'd place where the s'd slave was apprehended and the residence of the said Hardin Duke is eight miles.
Given under my hand and seal this 23 day of August 18[possibly 10]
