Gilbert Clinton Smith, according to his death certificate, was born in Gates County, North Carolina on December 6, 1871. He died on October 20, 1933 in Petersburg, Va. At the time of his death, according to an old obituary notice, he held the position of Pastor of the West End Baptist Church in Petersburg. He held pastorates in Richmond, Danville, Martinsburg and Salem and was prominent in the Southern Baptist Convention, having done much evangelistic work throughout the state.
